Emmanuel Vreven and Armel Ibala Zamba.
Abstract:
Synodontis carineae, new species, is described from the Kouilou-Niari Basin (Republic of Congo). It is distinguished from all other Lower Guinea Synodontis species by the following unique combination of characters: entire anterior edge of dorsal spine not serrated; posterior margin of operculum without opercular spine; 18-24 mandibular teeth; maxillary barbels bordered by a broad membrane; and a unique colour pattern characterised by numerous dark brown, irregularly shaped spots on a light brownish background colour with, in live specimens, a vivid yellowish overall sheen.
