It say in that article that a 75% water change was done prior to spawning. I have alway been under the impression that anything over a 20-30% water change can be potentially life threating for the tank inhabitants.
I have used different test kits, liquid and paper strips from many manufacturers. Ammonia and nitrite readings are usually the same. but other reading are different especially nitrate readings.
