 Relevant Information:  The true G.gibbiceps, L 165, is rarely imported and is from the Rio Negro  (Brazil). It has a  much  higher dorsal fin than the specimens imported from  Venezuela and Colombia but  the  colouration is  much the same. There is a  wide distribution and colour variants in  Brazil  and Peru for this  species  including L 083 and L 313  from Brazil,  Pará,  Rio Xingu  (south and floodplain  lakes at  Altamira),  L164  from  the Rio Tefé,  Brazil and L 196  from the Mato  Grosso,  Rio  Guaporé (Vila  Bela).

 Synonyms:  Ancistrus gibbiceps, Liposarcus altipinnis, Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps.
