This genus was previously placed in its own family of Ageneiosidae and you can still find some publications that still follow this line. Aquarium Care: As per this genera they will be fine as juveniles, but as they mature they become predatory so would need to be kept with fish that are not too small. A large tank would be needed with plenty of swimming space. Diet: Meat based. Etymology: The genus name Ageneiosus: beardless, pertaining to the very small maxillary barbels. The specific name polystictus: from the Greek poly = 'many' and stiktos = 'spotted', alluding to the small spots on this species.

Ageneiosus polystictus is endemic to Brazil, described for the Rio Negro, with occurrences in other blackwater drainages such as the Uatumã, Jaú, Nhamundá (Amazonas state) and Juruti (Pará state) rivers, all in the middle Amazon. It is a widely distributed species in these basins. No threats have been detected that could endanger its population; therefore, Ageneiosus polystictus has been categorized as Least Concern (IUCN 2022).
