Due to the revision and descriptions
by Dias et al 2024 to the Corydoradinae sub family
of Callichthyidae, CW004 and CW155
have turned out to be one and the same species and
have been placed in Lineage 9, the "short-snouted"
species with the designated type species: C. punctatus.
The revision and description has constituted in the
resurrection of the genus name Hoplisoma
(Agassiz, 1846). Due to the new paper in 2025 by Tencatt
et al, the CW numbers of CW004 (lineage 9), CW155
(lineage 8) , CW156 (lineage 1) and CW167 (lineage
8) have now been described as Hoplisoma noxium.
Aquarium Care: This is akin to most
of this genus, very peaceful, and would be best housed
with small to medium tank mates such as Tetras, Rasboras
and Danios or in a species tank
for breeding purposes.
Diet:
A good quality flake food and tablet food for
adults with sporadic feedings of frozen or live food
will keep your Corydoras/Hoplisoma in good
health. Etymology: The specific epithet
“noxium” derives from the Latin
“noxa”, a noun meaning “injury,
damage”, plus “ium”, a
Latin suffix used to form adjectives from nouns. The
name alludes to the powerful toxin released by the
new species under stress, which kills any fish kept
in the same bag/container during transport. An adjective.
Remarks:
This species is
still found on some online sources as Hoplisoma
sp. (CW004, CW155, CW156, & CW167).
South America:
Mato Grosso, upper Rio Tapajos drainage, Cachimbo
region, near the Rio Jamanxim, between the Rio Xingu
and Rio Tapajos drainages.
Size:
Male: 6.0 cm (2¼ins)
Female: 6.0cm (2½ins)
Temp:
22-26°C (71-79°F)
p.H.
6.0-7.2.
