Habitat: Leptorhamdia essequibensis occurs in the Branco, Nhamundá and Tocantins river basins in Brazil, and in the Essequibo river in Guyana (Bockmann and Guazzelli 2003, GBIF 2019, SpLink 2020). The species also occurs in the Cuyuní River, Venezuela (Lasso et al. 2004), and stretches into western Colombia. Etymology: The genus name Leptorhamdia: leptós, thin or slender, referring to elongate body of L. essequibensis; Rhamdia, a related genus [replacement name for Leptoglanis Eigenmann 1912, preoccupied by Leptoglanis Boulenger 1902 in Amphiliidae]. The specific name essequibensis: –ensis, Latin suffix denoting place: Essequibo River, Guyana, the type locality.

IUCN Red List

Despite the little information available on this species, it has a wide range and no apparent threats. Therefore, it is assessed as Least Concern (IUCN 2023).
