Relevant Information:

Aquarium Care: Will need a good water flow in the aquarium with a sand substrate and plenty of hiding places. Diet: Great algae eater, but you will have to subsidise this food with algae wafers and vegetable foods such as cucumber, zucchini and lettuce. Will also except tablet and worm foods. Sexual Differences: Males have better colour, a broader head and lips and adult males possess longer ventral fins than the females. Etymology: The specific name dorsale: Latin for “of the back,” allusion not explained nor evident; proposed in a footnote as a geographical variant of C. anomalus, which is described as having a dorsal spine equal or shorter than snout length, “base of dorsal equal to its distance from the caudal, the last ray reaching to the adipose,” back (dorsum) with dark cross-shades, and dorsal rays with small white dots. Remarks: The Chaetostoma species are not the easiest to maintain as the mountain stream species will need a water current to provide oxygen-rich water.

Common Name:

L187, L443

Synonyms:

Chaetostomus dorsalis

Family:

Loricariidae

Distribution:

South America: Upper Meta and upper Apuré River basins, Colombia and Venezuela. Type locality: Quebrada Cramalote, Villavicencio Meta River basin, Colombia.

Size:

10.0cm. (4ins)

Temp:

22-27°c (71-81°f.)

p.H.

6.0-7.5.

IUCN Red List

The distribution of Chaetostoma dorsale is restricted to piedmont and mountain rivers and the Meta and Guaviare drainages, where it usually has a high abundance. Various rivers in the distribution are in a good condition, but the expansion of the agricultural and urban frontier affects several tributaries and expands throughout the region. Based on an area of occupancy (AOO) of 548 km2, 2-4 threat-based locations and a continuing decline in the habitat, this species is assessed as Vulnerable (IUCN 2021).
