Relevant Information:

Habitat: This species is distributed in the Parana, Rio de la Plata, Ibera, Uruguay, Iguazu, Corrientes, Colastine, Nogoya rivers and Ibera marshes (Almirón et al. 2015). The species inhabits the Grandes Rios icthyological province of Argentina (Lopez et al. 2008) and the Región Humedales del corredor fluvial Chaco-Mesopotámico, Subregión Ríos, esteros, bañados y lagunas del río Paraná corresponding to Argentine wetland classification (Benzaquen et al. 2017). Aquarium Care: Said to be a bit more problematic in the aquarium if good water quality is not adhered to. They rest on aquatic vegetation in the aquarium so long leaved plants are recommended. Cooler temperatures and a strong filtration with adequate current will fare better for this species and for this genera overall. Reproduction: Scatters eggs throughout the aquarium and are not cared for by the parents. Diet: Will feed on flake, algae, tablet foods and algae wafers. Etymology: The specific name maculipinnis: macula (L.), spot; pinnis, Neo-Latin adjective of pinna (L.), fin, i.e., finned, referring to series of dark spots on fins.

Common Name:

None

Microlepidogaster maculipinnis, Otocinclus maculipinnis

Family:

Loricariidae

Distribution:

South America: Lower Paraná basin, Paraguay and La Plata River basins: Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. Type locality: Rio de la Plata, South America.

Size:
