First appeared in the German magazine DATZ on December 2003. The Hypostomus genus has 7 soft rays to the dorsal fin whereas the similar looking Pterygoplichthys species have 10 soft dorsal fin rays. Sexual Differences: Males usually, but not always, have larger and longer fins. Aquarium Care: This is one of the smaller species in the genera, and suitable for most aquarium set-ups. Will need many water changes due to the waste that they procure. Diet: Grazes on wood, so it needs soft wood in the aquarium. Food tablets, pellets and vegetable foods are also taken along with insect larvae.
