Description: Dorsal spines (total): 1; Anal spines: 0. Diagnosis: mandibular barbels with few, divided ramifications, branches short and thickened, not tuberculate; maxillary barbel bordered with distinct, broad basal membrane, at least as broad as barbel; 22-27 movable mandibular teeth; dorsal spine with few serrations distally on anterior edge, but with several serrations along posterior edge and prolonged by a short filament; base of adipose fin 1.4-3.6 times distance between dorsal fin and base of adipose fin; body almost completely spotted, including belly and fins; interorbital distance at most 86.6% of snout length; postocular length at least 60% of snout length; entire margin of opercle smooth; caudal fin without single dark patch at base of each fin lobe. Body shape (shape guide): fusiform / normal. This Synodontis is similar to S. velifer but this species has larger spots on the body and has a higher dorsal fin. Aquarium Care: A generally peaceful species but not to be housed with smaller fish as they may be preyed upon. Diet: A varied diet as per Synodontis species. Etymology: The specific name rebeli: Patronym not identified but almost certainly in honour of Austrian entomologist Hans Rebel (1861–1940), first director of the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien, where types are deposited.

Synodontis rebeli forms a complex with Synodontis obesus. Study has shown that it is difficult to distinguish these two species. Depending on geographical location, several morphological variations may occur. The distribution can be different from what is listed in this assessment. More information is needed on the species distribution before an assessment can be made so this species is considered to be Data Deficient, but needs updating (IUCN 2010).
