Aquarium Care: Not known in the hobby but like all Pimelodus species it can not be trusted with small fish such as tetras as they will pick them of at night on their forays. Diet: Most aquarium fare such as tablet, flake, worm and frozen foods. Etymology: The specific name garciabarrigai: In honour of botanist Hernando García-Barriga (1913–2005), Instituto de Ciencias Naturales (Colombia), a member of the expedition during which holotype was collected.

South America: Guayabero River basin, Orinoco River drainage, Colombia. Type locality: Colombia, Deep pool in Caño Lozada, about 11 km338 above its junction with the Guayabero River.

IUCN Red List

Pimelodus garciabarrigai is assessed as Vulnerable. The area of occupancy (AOO) is best estimated at 1,040 km2. Threats are a combination of deforestation from the agricultural frontier, and urban effluents. Given the regional impacts, there are 4-6 threat-based locations and an inferred continuing decline in habitat, (IUCN 2021).
