Description:
Conta pectinata, new species (Ng, 2005),
differs from its sole congener, C. conta,
in having anteriorly-directed [vs. antrorse (distally
directed)] serrations on the anterior edge of the
pectoral spine, and a longer (24.6-25.6 % SL vs. 21.9-23.4)
and a more slender (2.6-2.8 % SL vs. 3.9-4.4) caudal
peduncle.Habitat:From
the Brahmaputra River drainage in Assam, India. Collected
from shallow (10-30 cm) and moderately clear water
with pebbles, cobbles of variable colours and sand
particles, at an altitude of 127m. Associated
species: Aborichthys elongatus, Acanthocobitis
botia, Amblyceps mangois, Barilius barna, B. bendelisis,
Balitora brucei, Botia rostrata, Chanda nama, Crossocheilus
latius, Garra annandalei, G. gotyla, Neolissochilus
hexagonolepis, Pseudolaguvia shawi, Psilorhynchus
balitora, Puntius ticto, Schistura savona and Tor
tor. Etymology: Conta:
Bengali, kuta kanti, a name for a fish. pectinata:
Specific name from the Latin pectinata, meaning arranged
as a comb, in reference to the comb-like appearance
of the anteriorly-directed serrae on the anterior
edge of the pectoral spine. Remarks:
The image contributor collected this species from
from the Dibru River, Tinsukia Assam.

Conta
pectinata was described from the Brahmaputra River
drainage in Assam (Ng 2005) and is also present in Meghalaya.
It only known from collections made for the ornamental
fish trade, and there is not information available on
the species habitat, ecology, distribution and population
trends. At present it is assessed as Data
Deficient, but needs updating, (IUCN
2012).
