Similar to Hoplisoma
sp. (CW077), which is shipped out of Colombia, but
this may be the same species, as the location in Colombia
is unknown. This could indicate another catchment
area in another country. Also similar to CW104 from
the Rio Cuduyari in Colombia and CW108, but this species
lacks the dorsal blotch (corydorasworld.com). Habitat:
Hoplisoma tenharim is so far only known from
the Rio Manicoré and Rio Marmelos, all draining
into the Madeira basin. Lineage:
Placed in Lineage 9, the "short-snouted"
species with the designated type species: C. punctatus.
Aquarium Care: A minimum-sized tank
of 24” x 15” X 12” for a small shoal.
Good quality aquarium sand, such as BD Aquarium Sand,
or very smooth, rounded gravel, is the preferred substrate
when keeping these catfish. The aquarium should provide
some shelter in the form of rocks or bogwood, along
with some aquatic plants. As with all other fish species,
water quality and general husbandry are crucial, and
it is recommended that a minimum of 25% of the water
be changed on a weekly to fortnightly basis. Diet:
Readily accepts a mixed and varied diet which includes
granular foods, frozen bloodworm and a good quality
flake. Etymology: The specific epithet
“tenharim” pays tribute to the Tenharim
people, an indigenous tribe native to the Madeira-Tapajós
interfluve. They are known for their self-denomination
as Kagwahiva, meaning “we” or “us”
in the Tenharim language, as well as for their close
cultural ties with the hydrographic systems in which
they live. Unfortunately, since the construction of
the Trans- Amazonian highway, the survival of the
Tenharim people has been in jeopardy. A noun in apposition.
Remarks:
The Chameleon shaped eyes are a distinctive feature
in this species which correlates to CW077.
