Abstract:
Acestridium gymnogaster and A. scutatum
are described as new from small tributaries to the
middle Rio Madeira, Amazonas, Brazil. Acestridium
gymnogaster is most similar to A.
discus from which it
differs in the number of medial unpaired predorsal
plates, the arrangement of chromatophores in predorsal
area, and the absence of contact midventrally between
the lateral abdominal plates. Acestridium scutatum
is most similar to A. triplax from which
it differs in having a longer snout and by the shape
of the preanal plate (Roberto E. Reis, Pablo Lehmann
A., 2009). Aquarium Care: Will need
a fairly strong current in the aquarium. Not the easiest
to care for so really a catfish for the more experienced
Loricariid keeper, so would be better in a species
tank on their own. Diet: Fine Vegetarian
foods especially algae and small meaty foods such
as brine shrimp nauplii. They rarely sit on the substrate
but on leaf stalks and branches so they are especially
difficult to feed. Etymology: The
genus name Acestridium: –idium, Latin
diminutive connoting resemblance: akéstra,
darning needle, presumably referring to long spines
on tip of snout of A. discus The specific
name gymnogaster: gymnós, bare or
naked; gast?r, belly or stomach, referring to naked
area of skin between anterior lateral abdominal plates.

Red List
Acestridium
gymnogaster is endemic to Brazil and known from
37 type specimens, sampled in only three locations,
less than 3 km apart, in the Madeira River basin, Amazonas
state. Considering that, in general, Acestridium species
are found in fast-flowing environments and associated
with submerged vegetation, habitat changes can threaten
the presence of these organisms in their natural environments.
However, its recent description, coupled with the scarcity
of data on its biology, geographic distribution, and
possible threats, categorizes Acestridium gymnogaster
as Data Deficient (DD). A greater sampling effort directed
at this species is suggested for a better assessment
of its conservation status (IUCN 2022).
