Description: Dorsal spines (total): 1; Dorsal soft rays (total): 7; Anal soft rays: 11 - 13. This species has been separated from S. schall of which it defers mainly by the width of the pemaxillary toothplate and can be distinguished one from the other by differences in orbit diameter.
