Trichomycterus barbouri
is the only species of the genus widely present in
the chaco-pampean plain. (Luis A. Fernández(2000), Cardoso et al 2015). Habitat:
Trichomycterus barbouri (Eigenmann, 1911) is
a little-known species with a discontinuous distribution
from the Beni River in Bolivia, in the Amazon River
basin, to northwestern and central Argentina, in the
Río de la Plata basin. Here, we describe new
records of T. barbouri from three rivers
of the chaco-pampean plain, two in the Santiago del
Estero province and one in the Cuarto River basin
in Córdoba province. These reports allow expanding
the known area of distribution of the species, extending
southwards the limit of the known distribution. Etymology:
The specific name barbouri: In honour of
American herpetologist Thomas Barbour (1884–
1946), later director of the Harvard Museum of Comparative
Zoology, who obtained holotype in La Paz, Bolivia,
from a “person who had been prospecting along
the Beni River”.
