Habitat: Species of the genus are adaptable to different freshwater habitats, including ponds, ditches, burrow pits along roads and dammed areas. Etymology: The genus name Trachelyopterus: meaning trachelos, neck; pterus, fin, presumably referring to the elevated nape of T. coriaceus, which gives the appearance that dorsal fin originates at the neck region. The specific name ceratophysus: ceratos, horn; physus, bladder, referring to two horn-shaped diverticula at terminal end of swim bladder.
