Habitat: Found
in rivers and ponds, commonly in muddy pools and tanks.
Adults usually occur among marginal vegetation or
roots in both still and slow-flowing waters. Diet:
Feed on plants, shrimps. Insects and detritus. Reproduction:
Oviparous, distinct pairing possibly like other members
of the same family. Etymology: The
genus name Mystus: "Mystax" meaning
whiskered (hair on the upper lip) Mystus was
first used by Belon in 1553 to describe all fish with
whiskers. The specific name keletius: Latinisation
of kéléti, local Pondichery name for
this catfish (and for M. cavasius) in India.
Remarks:
It is important to note that the species is known
only from its lectotype and thus the taxonomic validity
of this species is open to question.
Mystus
keletius is assessed as Least Concern because of
a very wide distribution in southern India, with no
specific wide spread threats, although the species is
found to be very rare (needs updating IUCN 2011).
