Shares a similar colour pattern with Hoplisoma schwartzi from the Rio Purus, Peru. Colouration: Presence of a distinct mask accross the eyes and usually a dark blotch ventral to origin of dorsal fin or at basal part of dorsal fin; dark spots on the body arranged in three longitudinal rows; caudal fin with 4-5 vertical black bars, the first across the base of the fin. Lineage: Placed in Lineage 9, the "short-snouted" species with the designated type species: C. punctatus. A revision in the future would constitute the resurrection of the genus name Hoplisoma (Agassiz, 1846). As of the latest revision (Dias et al 2024) Corydoras surinamensis has now been placed in Lineage 9 and has the new genus name of Hoplisoma and a change to the specific name to surinamense. Aquarium Care: This is akin to most of this genus, very peaceful, and would be best housed with small to medium tank mates such as Tetras, Rasboras and Danios or in a species tank for breeding purposes. Diet: A good quality flake food and tablet food for adults with sporadic feedings of frozen or live food will keep your Corydoras/Hoplisoma in good health. Etymology: The specific name surinamense: From Surinam. Remarks: This species is still found on some online sources as Corydoras surinamensis.
