Relevant Information:

Habitat: Doras higuchii is endemic to Brazil and occurs in the Amazon basin, in the lower Jari River and both upstream and downstream of the waterfalls of the Trombetas and Xingu rivers. Etymology: The genus name Doras: as defined by Lacepède, doras means cuirass, a piece of armour covering body from neck to waist (e.g., breastplate), probably referring to hard bony plates and/or thick, leathery skin (name does not mean “spear” per Valenciennes [1840] and others). The specific name higuchii: in honour of Horácio Higuchi, Universidade de São Paulo, for his “groundbreaking contributions” to the systematics of doradid catfishes. Remarks: It is possible that the construction of the Cachoeira Porteira, Belo Monte and Santo Antônio hydroelectric plants will result in negative local impacts for the subpopulations present in these rivers. However, the large calculated extent of occurrence (EOO = 378,361 km 2 ) and the diversity of habitats occupied by the species indicate that there is no threat capable of leading it to extinction in a short period of time. As there are no significant threats to Doras higuchii , it was categorised as Least Concern (LC), (IUCN 2022).
