Magdalenichthys yariguies
is a newly described species of catfish belonging
to the genus Magdalenichthys, which is endemic to
the Magdalena River basin in Colombia. It was discovered
along with three other new Magdalenichthys species:
M. lundbergi, M. mompox, and M.
poira. The new genus Magdalenichthys
is characterised by a unique feature: a pointed posterior
process on the posterolateral corner of the lateral
ethmoid bone. This process extends parallel to the
lateral margin of the neurocranium and contacts the
lateral margin of the frontal bone. This distinguishes
it from other heptapterids, except Phenacorhamdia,
which also has a prognathous mouth (mouth extending
forward). Magdalenichthys differs from Phenacorhamdia
in having a longer upper caudal-fin lobe and simple
hemal spines of vertebrae dorsal to the anal fin.
Habitat: This species is restricted
to the La Colorada River drainage, a direct tributary
of the middle section of the Magdalena River basin.
Etymology: The genus name Magdalenichthys:
In allusion to the Magdalena River basin, remarking
on the restricted geographic distribution of this
heptapterid genus to the Cauca and Magdalena rivers,
which together form the main hydrographic basin of
the trans-Andean region of Colombia, framed by the
Western, Central, and Eastern cordilleras, the most
salient feature of the Colombian geomorphology. Gender
masculine. The specific name yariguies:The name yariguies honours the exterminated indigenous
group that inhabited the Río Cascajales drainage.
Used as a noun in apposition. (DoNascimiento et al.
