Relevant Information:

Description: This genus is similar looking to the Pseudohemiodon genera but the latter has bony plates on the underneath wheras Crossiloricaria is nearly naked apart from a line of small platelets along the medial ventral line. Aquarium Care: Provide hiding places and a sandy substrate where this species likes to bury itself. Diet: Insect larvae. Etymology: The specific name cephalaspis: Named after Cephalaspis agassiz 1835, a fossil ostracaderm, with which it “bears a striking resemblance” (translation).

South America: Magdalena River basin, Colombia. Type locality: Colombie, Río Magdalena.

IUCN Red List

There are no studies on the species' bio-ecology or its population dynamics. There are also information gaps on the true range of distribution in Colombia. However, this species has a wide distribution in the lowlands throughout the Magdalena, Cauca, and Atrato river basins. Therefore, Crossoloricaria cephalaspis is assessed as Least Concern (LC), (IUCN 2023).
