Abstract:
Despite being one of the better-surveyed regions in
Brazil, the upper Rio Paraná basin still reveals
relatively numerous large new species of fish. Here,
we present a new uniquely coloured species of the
highly diverse, armored catfish genus Hypostomus.
The new species was mostly found in the Rio Grande
basin, plus a single record in the main channel of
the Rio Paraná. Hypostomus caudofasciatus
n. sp. is remarkable by its large eyes, and it completely
differs from congeners by having four longitudinal
dark stripes on the flanks and a caudal fin with conspicuous
longitudinal dark stripes on a yellow background (unique
in Hypostomus), (Zawadzki, C.H. & Azevedo,
F.M. 2024). The Hypostomus genus has 7 soft
rays to the dorsal fin whereas the similar looking
Pterygoplichthys species have 10 soft dorsal
fin rays. Aquarium
Care: Will need a good sized aquarium of
5ft (150cm.) or over due to their final adult size.As this genus in the main are messy eaters,
good water quality and filtration would need to be
adhered to. Diet:
Will eat all manner of foods in the aquarium, vegetable,
tablet, pellet foods and a good quality flake food.
Etymology: The specific name caudofascitus:
auda (L.), tail; fasciatus (L.), banded or striped,
referring to conspicuous longitudinal dark stripes
on the caudal fin.
