Description:
Hypostomus subcarinatus is distinguished
from all congeners by having a blue-tan dorsal fin
in living specimens (vs. not having a blue-tan dorsal
fin). Additionally, H. subcarinatus is diagnosed
from the species of the H. cochliodon group
by having slender viliform bicuspid teeth (vs. robust
spoon-shaped teeth) and by having dentaries angled
to each other more than 90 degrees (vs. dentaries
angled from 80 to 90 degrees); from the remaining
congeners except H. affinis, H. ancistroides,
H. argus, H. aspilogaster, H.
borellii, H. boulengeri, H. carinatus,
H. careopinnatus, H. commersoni,
H. corantijni, H. crassicauda, H.
delimai, H. dlouhyi, H. faveolus,
H. formosae, H. gymnorhynchus, H.
hemiurus, H. hoplonites, H. interruptus,
H. micromaculatus, H. niceforoi,
H. nigrolineatus, H. pantherinus,
H. paucimaculatus, H. piratatu,
H. plecostomus, H. punctatus, H.
pusarum, H. rhantos, H. scabriceps,
H. seminudus, H. tapijara, H.
velhochico and H. watwata, by having
moderate keels along the five lateral series of plates
(vs. lacking keels); from the species above by having
a more slender and elongate body, what can be somewhat
depicted by the anal-fin unbranched ray length longer
than head depth (vs. anal-fin unbranched ray length
shorter than head depth) (Zawadzki
CH, et al 2019). Aquarium
Care: Will need a good sized aquarium of
5ft (150cm.) or over due to their final adult size.As this genus in the main are messy eaters,
good water quality and filtration would need to be
adhered to. Diet:
Will eat all manner of foods in the aquarium, vegetable,
tablet, pellet foods and a good quality flake food.
Etymology: The specific name subcarinatus:
sub– (L.), less than or somewhat; carinatus
(L.), keeled, i.e., slightly keeled, presumably referring
to four longitudinal ridges on sides.

Red List
Hypostomus
subcarinatus is recorded in coastal drainages of
eastern Brazil, with the possibility of occurrence in
the São Francisco basin being uncertain; however,
it presents taxonomic problems. Because it is very similar
to other species of the genus Hypostomus ,
taxonomic identification is difficult, which can lead
to uncertainties in collection records. For this reason,
there is no reliable information on the distribution,
abundance, and threats to which the species is subjected,
making its assessment impossible. Therefore, Hypostomus
subcarinatus was categorised as Data
Deficient (DD), (IUCN 2022).
