Relevant Information:

Enters flooded forest. Migrates upstream when water levels begin to rise at the beginning of the flood season and moves downstream as water clears at the end of the flood season. Habitat: Occurs in medium to large-sized rivers. Diet: The stomachs of the specimens examined were more or less filled with mollusks, usually bivalves. Etymology: The specific name waaendersii: Jan Theodore van Bloemen Waanders (1820–1889) was a Captain, then Lieutenant-Colonel, of the Artillery, East Sumatra and an amateur naturalist. He was the son of Hendrik Lodewijk van Bloemen Waanders. He collected the types. Remarks: Although there is no detailed information on the population size and trend of this species, it is still abundant throughout its known distribution and the population trend is thus suspected to be stable or declining at a rate that precludes it from a threatened category. Any localized or regional threats to this species are considered unlikely to affect it on a range-wide scale, so it is assessed as Least Concern (IUCN 2019).
