Relevant Information:

Description: Dorsal spines (total): 1; Dorsal soft rays (total): 6; Anal spines: 5; Anal soft rays: 9. Head broad and depressed. Eyes smaller than other species. Snout broad. Anterior nostril tubular and directed forward. Mouth distinctly subterminal with a developed upper lip. Colouration: Body cream coloured, with several round brown spots. Broad transversal unpigmented stripe present on dorsum. Dorsal fin yellowish white with small dark spots on the spine. Pectoral fin brownish grey dorsally, with small dark spots. Caudal fin is whitish and unpigmented. Aquarium Care: Very much a catfish for the larger aquarium to be kept by the more serious catfish keeper. As with most species in this genera it will be predatory so would need to be kept with fish that are not too small although this species would be better to be kept on its own as other fish will be seen as prey. A large tank would be needed no smaller than 2 metres (6ft) long and a depth of 70cm (28ins) with powerful filtration, to give it plenty of swimming space. Diet: Earthworms, fish fillets, frozen foods such as whole and unbroken smelts, shrimp or mussel meat. Tablet and pellet foods will also be taken. Etymology: The specific name inpai: Of INPA, acronym for Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia, which helped fund the authors’ field work. Remarks: Despite the little information available on this species, it has a wide range and no apparent threats. Therefore, it is assessed as Least Concern (IUCN 2023).
