The genus and its type species,
Rhicron rhicron, were officially designated
by ichthyologist Peter Endruweit in 2025. These fish
are native to the Irrawaddy River system and have
specific features, like a large fleshy adipose fin
and a forked caudal fin. The designation by original
description indicates that Rhicron is a monotypic
genus, meaning it currently contains only one recognised
species, R. rhicron. This new genera and
species is small being 29.8 mm from snout to base
of caudal fin (Sabaj, Mark 2025). Aquarium
Care: Not a lot is known of this new species
but probably a fine sandy substrate would be preferred,
since these fish will spend a considerable amount
of time burrowing into the substrate.
