Relevant Information:

This species has many colour forms as can be seen in the three thumbnail images below. Description: It differs from C. balios by having 14–15 ventral procurrent caudal-fin rays (vs. 10–13). Habitat: Cambeva botuvera is widely distributed in the Itajaí River basin. Colouration: Being distinguished from other congeners in the coastal area, except C. balios, by the colouration with two distinct layers in adult specimens composed of large ellipsoid black blotches, sometimes coalescent and forming a mid-lateral stripe, vermicular black marks, or yet inconspicuous black-spotted in the inner layer; and small spots in the outer layer over a pale yellow background (vs. body with mottled pattern of blotches not ellipsoid, with spots or rounded blotches restricted to form a mid-lateral line, or with small circular blotches not coalescent) (Donin LM, Ferrer J, Carvalho TP. 2022). Etymology: The name botuvera is an allusion to the occurrence of the species in the municipality of Botuverá, Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. This name is derived from the Tupi-Guarani, possibly meaning brilliant mountain (Costa WJEM, Feltrin CRM, Katz AM 2021).
