This is a large genus with over 108 species described. Trichomycterus spegazzinii is a species from the family of parasitic catfish (Trichomycteridae). The scientific name of the species was first validly published in 1897 by Carlos Berg. Etymology: The species is named after Dr. Carlos Spegazzini , who collected it in the Rio de Cachi in the Argentinian province of Salta, at an altitude of 2500-2800 meters above sea level, in January 1897.
