Can be confused with Hoplisoma paleatum. Unique in that they have an extended predorsal scute. The main differences between this species and Hoplisoma paleatum is the size, as the latter grows to around the 7cm mark while H. steindachneri only atains 5cm. The males of H. steindachneri possess a more elongated dorsal fin and are not as heavy looking as the females. The body markings are also different with H. steindachneri having two midlateral body blotches compared with three in H. paleatum. As of the latest revision (Dias et al 2024) Corydoras steindachneri has now been placed in Lineage 9 and has the new genus name of Hoplisoma. Lineage: Placed in Lineage 6 which has always been classified as Corydoras (Lacépède, 1803) so a new genus would need to be described and a new type species when a new revision is carried out. Aquarium Care: This is akin to most of this genus, very peaceful, and would be best housed with small to medium sized tankmates such as Tetras, Rasboras and Danios or in a species tank for breeding purposes. Best to purchase 6 individuals or more as they will be happier in a group. Diet: Readily accepts a mixed and varied diet which includes granular foods, tablet food, frozen bloodworm and a good quality flake. Etymology: The specific name steindachneri: In honour of Franz Steindachner, the Austrian ichthyologist, (1834-1919). Remarks: This species is still found on some online sources as Corydoras steindachneri.
