Brachyrhamdia heteropleura
possibly mimics Pimelodella spp. (Slobodian
and Bockmann 2013). Habitat: Brachyrhamdia
heteropleura occurs in the Essequibo (in Guyana),
Coratijn (in Suriname; albeit exact occurrence records
are not known) and Branco and Marauirá rivers,
tributaries of the Negro in the states of Amazonas
and Roraima, Brazil (Bockmann and Guazzelli 2003,
GBIF 2019, SpLink 2020). Congeners of the species
inhabit benthic environments with sandy bottoms, in
marginal streams and lagoons, and are generally associated
with marginal vegetation (ICMBio 2018).
Aquarium Care: House in aquaria (24ins/60cm
or over) with alternate sand and gravel substrate.
Provide planted area. Keep in a species tank or with
Corydoras and larger Characins or Anabantoides
in the top half as they can be predatory with small
species such as Neon Tetras. Diet:
Tablet and pellet foods. Frozen and live foods such
as bloodworm. Insect larvae. Not a fussy eater. Etymology:
The specific name heteropleura: héteros
(Gr.), different; pleurá (Gr.), side, referring
to “punctate” sides, “the chromatophores
in the median area between the dorsal and anal gathered
along the septa; a median series of chromatophores
along the sides”. Remarks:
