Description:
This species is distinguished from P.
moolenburghae
in having fewer anal-fin rays 37-41 (vs.42-49); fewer
rakers on the first gill arch 33-35 (vs. 43-45); a
wider head 10.5-11.0% SL (vs. 8.5-9.9% SL); differs
from P.
brachypopterus in
having more anal-fin rays 37-41 (vs. 31-35); shorter
(23.1-24.3% SL vs. 27.0-30.6) and narrower (10.5-11.0%
SL vs. 11.7-14.0) head; differs from P. mitchelli
in having more anal-fin rays 37-41 (vs. 35-37); longer
nasal, maxillary and mandibular barbels, reaching
to at least anal-fin origin (vs. not reaching beyond
pelvic-fin base). Habitat: The species
was recently described from peat swamp forest in Narathiwat
Province, southern Thailand. Its full distribution
is uncertain, however there are possible records of
the species from associated drainages as far north
as the Isthmus of Kra within peninsular Thailand,
and the species should be looked for in suitable habitat
in northeastern Peninsular Malaysia. Aquarium
Care: Quite a shy fish so would need a planted
tank to make them feel safe in their surroundings.
Have at least 6 to form a group. Diet:
Feeds on insect larvae and small invertebrates.
Etymology: The specific name indigens:
Latin for indigent, i.e., in need of or wanting, referring
to lower number of anal-fin rays and gill rakers compared
with the similar P.
moolenburghae.

IUCN
Red List
Recent
survey and monitoring data are lacking, and the species'
ecology is poorly known. Whilst its restricted distribution
and declining habitat might qualify it for a threatened
category (Vulnerable D2), it is assessed as Data Deficient
at present. However, it should be reassessed when further
data become available (IUCN 2019).
