This is a very pretty species
with orange colouration in the fins. Aquarium
Care: As with most of this genus, will do
well in a larger aquarium, with it well filtered.
Water parameters can be quite diverse for this genera.
Diet: Omnivore with a liking for
green, tablet and frozen foods. Etymology:
The specific name asperatus: Latin for rough,
referring to the small granular scales on head and
most of body.

asperatus is known only from its type locality
in the Araguaia River basin, and has not been recorded
since its description. References to the species in
the literature do not specify the locality. There are
no records in collections, and knowledge about H.
asperatus is limited by the difficulty in taxonomic
definition and requires revision. Therefore, there is
no information available to assess the conservation
status of the species. Thus, Hypostomus asperatus
was categorised as Data
Deficient (DD), (IUCN 2022).
