The Hypostomus genus
has 7 soft rays to the dorsal fin whereas the similar
looking Pterygoplichthys species have 10 soft
dorsal fin rays. Aquarium Care: As
this is one of the smallest members of this genera
they will do well in a smaller tank such as a 24"
x 18" x 12" or above and with the aquarium
well filtered. Water parameters can be quite diverse
for this genera. Diet: Omnivore with
a liking for green, tablet and frozen foods. Etymology:
The specific name mutucae: Of the Rio Mutuca,
Mato Grosso, Brazil, type locality.

Hypostomus
mutucae is distributed in the drainage of the Mutuca
River, a tributary of the Cuiabá River, in the
upper Paraguay River basin, in Brazil. Despite its restricted
distribution, no significant threats have been identified
that endanger its population, and it is categorised
as Least Concern
(LC), (IUCN 2022).
