The species pictured has a
slightly different colouration from the original description
and may only be a variant of L. gibbosa or
a new species from this genus. Aquarium Care:
Needs to be kept in an aquarium with a high oxygen
content for their requirements due to them coming
from swift currents where they sit upon rounded stones.
Keep at lower temperatures as high values can be a
death sentence to this species. No information on
diet was available. Etymology: The
specific name gibbosa: Latin for humpbacked,
referring to its projecting nape. Remarks:

Lampiella
gibbosa is endemic to Brazil, occurring in the
Ribeira do Iguape river basin. Its extent of occurrence
is estimated at 3,450 km² . In the areas where
it occurs, it is abundant and associated with environments
with good water quality. The species is captured for
aquariums, but it is not possible to estimate the impact
of this activity on the species. Part of its distribution
is outside protected areas, subject to habitat degradation
by anthropogenic activities. As the population is not
severely fragmented, and it is not possible to apply
the concept of locations, the species has been classified
as Near Threatened
(NT), approaching the EN category in criterion B1b(iii).
The main recommendations for the conservation of the
species are: the protection of the aquatic ecosystem
and an assessment to quantify its commercial capture
(IUCN 2021).
