Relevant Information:

There are two species in this genera, D. peruanus and D. emarginatus. Description: Duopalatinus is classified under the "Calophysus-Pimelodus clade". Within this clade, it is considered a part of the "Pimelodus-group" of Pimelodids, which also includes Pimelodus, Exallodontus, Cheirocerus, Iheringichthys, Bergiaria, Bagropsis, Parapimelodus, Platysilurus, Platystomatichthys, and Propimelodus. Habitat: Endemic species of the São Francisco River basin (Rosa et al. 2003). There are records of the species in the Paraopeba River and the das Velhas River, upper São Francisco River basin (F. Vieira pers. comm. 2011). Duopalatinus emarginatus occurs in the upper and middle São Francisco region, in the states of Minas Gerais and Bahia, Brazil. Etymology: The specific name emarginatus: Latin for deprived of its edge, presumably referring to the emarginate caudal fin of dried and mounted holotype (in which the lobes of an otherwise deeply forked caudal fin may have broken off). Remarks: Duopalatinus emarginatus occurs in the upper São Francisco River region. It is an infrequent and not very abundant species, but as no significant threats have been identified, Duopalatinus emarginatus has been categorised as Least Concern (LC), (IUCN 2022).
