eddsi This species (Pseudecheneis eddsi) is named after David Edds, who collected part of the type series and in honour of his work on Nepalese fishes.
ebriensis –ensis, Latin suffix denoting place: Ebri lagoon, Ivory Coast, type locality (Clarias ebriensis).
eburneensis From a geographical locality.
edentatus Name refers to the lack of teeth (Hypophthalmus edentatus).
ehrhardti Named in honour of W.W.Erdhardt.
eigenmanni In honour of Dr.Carl H.Eigenmann, Professor of Ichthyology in Indiana (1863-1927).
elankadensis Named for its type locality, Elankadu (Manimala River, Kerala, India), (Glyptothorax elankadensis).
electricus Electrical.
elegans Elegant, or nice.
eleutherus Meaning free, referring to the incomplete fusion of the posterior portion of the adipose fin to the body.
ellisae Dedicated to Mrs Marion Durbin Ellis.
elongatus/um Named for the elongated general shape of the body, particularly marked at the tip of snout, caudal peduncle, and caudal fin.
emarginatus/a With a margin.
empousa Émpousa, in Greek mythology a one-legged specter assuming various forms, referring to this catfish’s “rather bizarre external appearance”, (Scoloplax empousa).
enigmatica From the Latin name 'enigmatica' = baffling or inexplicable, for the unexpected discovery, obscure relationships and origin.
enfurnado From Gruna do Enfurnado, the name of the type locality, meaning shut, hidden, or isolated in a cave or cavern.
ephippifer Ephippium, saddle; fero, to bear, referring to the saddle-shaped markings on body (Akysis ephippifer).
eques From ‘eques’, a horse.
eriarcha The specific name of eriarcha: meaning eri-, very; architis, anus, referring to the long anal fin (Ramdella eriarcha).
ericius From the Latin, ericius, for hedgehog in reference to the many sharp odontodes on the keels.
eschwartzae Named for Ms. Eugenia Schwartz, an artist and benefactor whose generous support through the Coypu Foundation made this research possible (Andeancistrus eschwartzae).
esperanzae Named in honour of Esparanza Rocha.
eutaenia eu-, well or very; taenia, band, referring to “strong” blackish stripe from snout through eye to base of caudal fin (Pimelodella eutaenia).
euptera/us Good fins.
eurycephalus From the Greek, eurys = broad, wide; kephale = head.
eurystoma/us eury, wide; stoma, mouth, referring to the wide mouth of adults compared to congeners (Microglanis eurystoma, Satan eurystomas).
eupogon eu-, well or very; pogon, beard, presumably referring to nasal barbels (“twice and a half as long as eye”), maxillary barbels (“a little longer than the head”), and/or outer mandibular barbels (“three fourths the length of the head, inner one half”), (Tachysurus eupogon).
evansii In honour of Evans.
evelynae In honour of Mrs. Evelyne Axelrod.
eversi In honour of Hans-Georg Evers.
exilis Slim or slender, pertaining to the slim humeral process.
existimatus Considered, allusion not explained, perhaps reflecting Mees’ statement: “I have considered the possibility that the differences between Centromochlus heckelii and Centromochlus existimatus are not specific but sexual, a possibility that appears to be strengthened by the fact that the two have so often been collected together (as evidenced by mixed samples in collection)”.
