Latin for eleven, referring
to number of dorsal-fin rays (I, 10) compared to the closely
related Chaetostomus duodecimalis (=P. etentaculatus),
which has 12 (I, 11), (Ptergoplichthys undecimalis).

From
the Latin undulatus, like a wave.

unillano
Species name from Latin
prefix 'uni' meaning one, unique, and from the Spanish
word 'llano' meaning a plain terrain; alluding to the
savannas or plains crossed by tributaries and the Orinoco
River in Colombia and Venezuela (Pseudohemiodon unillano).
utik
The
specific name utik: from Ikan (=fish) Manong
utik, local Jakartan (Batavian) name for this catfish
[also spelled oetik by Bleeker later in 1846, which is
frequently used in modern literature, but utik was clearly
Bleeker’s intent and appears to have priority by
a few months], (Arius utik).
uranoscopus
From the Greek 'ouranos'
(sky) and 'skopos' (literally watchman, 'skopeoo' means
to look at), referring to the supero-lateral position
of the eyes.
urucu
Named
for the type locality, the Rio Urucu basin. Originally,
the word comes from the Tupi (‘‘uru-ku’’)
for red, derived from the colour of the fruit of the ‘‘urucuzeiro’’
(Bixa orellana L.), low tree of the family Bixacea, native
from tropical America. A noun in apposition.
uruguayensis
From Uruguay.
usmai
Dedicated
to Saulo Usma for his contributions to the ichthyological
collection building in the Cauca valley, and for promoting
an active interchange between Colombian and Venezuelan
ichthyologists, since his MSc studies in 2000 at Universidad
Nacional Experimental de los Llanos Ezequiel Zamora (Guanare,
Venezuela).
ussuriensis
Named from the Ussuri
River on the Russian and Chinese border.
