honour of P .B .N. Jackson, the Officer-in-charge of the
J. F. R. O. Malawi survey who collected the Haplochromis
species.
jacupiranga
The species name, jacupiranga,
refers to the type locality, Parque Estadual de Jacupiranga,
município de Cajati, São Paulo, Brazil.
Jacupiranga is also the indigenous Tupylanguage name for
a species of bird native to the region (Penelope obscura
- Cracidae), commonly known as the dusky-legged guan,
and comes from yaku (a bird) and piranga (red). Treated
here as a noun in apposition.

for the author's (Nathan K. Lujan) mother, nicknamed Jantje
prior to her emigration from the Netherlands, in deep
appreciation for her hard work and material and emotional
encouragement that promoted his professional development
and made his research possible.
johnelsi
In honour of Swedish
zoologist and fisheries biologist Alf G. Johnels (1916–2010),
Swedish Museum of Natural History, who observed and reported
the first specimens in 1954 (Chrysichthys johnelsi).
jordani
Named
in honour of C. Basil Jordan, the American zoologist.
joropo
Joropo refers to a
collection of musical styles in the Llanos, the Orinoco-basin
- because Chaetostoma joropo lives there.
jubata
Maned
or crested, presumably referring to the thick band of
long, hair-like bristles on each side of the heads of
males (Rineloricaria jubata).
julii
Named in honour of
a now unknown Mr. Julius.
jumbo
Pertaining
to the larger size and girth of this Parotocinclus
species against the rest of the genus.
juruense
This "pim"
(Brachyplatystoma) named after the river of the
type locality. Rio Jurua.
juruensis

suffix denoting place: Río Jurua, Brazil, type
locality (Leptodoras
juruensis).
jussariensis
Refers to Jussari Municipality,
where the new species was discovered and collected, (Ituglanis
jussariensis).
