Relevant Information:

Description: Body slightly elongated, head tall with a long snout. Maxillary barbels reaching the base of the caudal fin or occasionally surpassing it. Dorsal fin with a well developed spine reaching the adipose fin when depressed (Souza-Filho & Shibatta 2007). Habitat: Recorded in the Mamoré sub-basin (Amazon Basin) (Carvajal-Vallejos & Fernández 2011), and in the Bermejo (Torrico et al. 2020) and Pilcomayo sub-basins (La Plata Basin) (Baigún & Minotti 2019). Colouration: Body of uniform silver colour or with very diffuse spots. Head slightly darker on the dorsal part. All fins dark (Souza-Filho & Shibatta 2007). Aquarium Care: Not known in the hobby but like all Pimelodus species it can not be trusted with small fish such as tetras as they will pick them of at night on their forays. Diet: Most aquarium fare such as tablet, flake, worm and frozen foods. Etymology: The specific name argenteus: Latin for silvery, referring to its silvery colouration. Remarks: Despite the little information available on this species, it has a wide range and no apparent threats. Therefore, it is assessed as Least Concern (IUCN 2023).
