Relevant Information:

Description: Body short and high; depth 4; head large, 3% in body; eyes large, 4% in head, 2 in snout; mouth wide, 34 in head's length; maxillary barbels thick, flattened (not round) and directed forward (not backward as in all other members of the subfamily Pimelodinae); they reach, if bent backward, to the anterior part of the anal fins. Triangular humeral process, long, the length of pectoral fin; dorsal fin high; pectoral spine flat, very strong, serrated on the anterior edge and sharply dentated on the posterior. Adipose long, in body. Colouration: Back dusky; belly white; sides with five longitudinal irregular rows of dark blotches. Aquarium Care: Should not be kept with smaller species. In saying that they should be non problematic in the aquarium with same size or larger tank mates such as barbs, gouramies, cichlids and other South American catfish in a large mature tank. Provide plant cover and hiding places to make them feel more secure in their surroundings. Diet: Will eat most prepared foods such as tablet, pellet and frozen foods. Etymology: The specific name platicirris: platys, flat; cirrus, curl or tendril, referring to flattened (not round) maxillary barbels.
