Abstract:
Glyptothoraxcarnatus be distinguished
from Mekong congeners by its deep body relative to
the caudal peduncle (caudal peduncle depth 2.8–3.6
times in body depth at dorsal-fin origin vs. 1.9–3.0)
and combination of characters in colour pattern, thoracic
adhesive apparatus (TAA) morphology, nuchal plate
shape, and morphometry. Habitat:
Glyptothorax carnatus is presently known
from the middle Mekong river drainage in Laos (Nam
Ou and Xe Bangfai watershed) and Cambodia (vicinity
of Stung Treng). It is expected to be present in between
these two areas and is probably also present in adjacent
watersheds in Thailand (Ng & Kottelat, 2025).
Etymology: The specific name carnatus:
Latin for "fat", "fleshy" or "corpulent"
refers to the deep body of this species in relation
to the tail peduncle. Remarks:
previously confused with G.
fuscus and G.
lampris, and comparisons
with these two species are provided (Ng & Kottelat,
2025).
