Relevant Information:

Very similar to Hoplisoma reynoldsi but does not possess the high dorsal fin of this species and has slightly different colour markings. When first imported it was known in the aquarium trade as Corydoras sp. "Asher", after the fish exporter Asher Benzaken and gained the C-number of C064. Description: Dorsal spines (total): 1; Dorsal soft rays (total): 7; Anal soft rays: 7. Lineage: Placed in Lineage 6 which has always been classified as Corydoras (Lacépède, 1803) so a new genus would need to be described and a new type species when a new revision is carried out. As of the latest revision (Dias et al 2024) Corydoras tukano has now been placed in Lineage 9 and has the new genus name of Hoplisoma. Colouration: Distinguished from all its congeners, except Hoplisoma reynoldsi  and Hoplisoma weitzmani, by its colour pattern consisting of three large, dark blotches, the first one "mask" on the head, across the eye, the second one on the trunk at the level of the dorsal fin, and the third one on the trunk at the level of the adipose fin. Differs further from H. reynoldsi mainly by the development of trunk blotches; and from H. weitzmani by the presence of a dusky saddle between the dorsal and adipose fin, the second trunk blotch extending vertically from the adipose-fin base to the anal-fin base, and the presence of four dark, vertical stripes in the caudal fin. Aquarium Care: This is akin to most of this genus, very peaceful, and would be best housed with small to medium tank mates such as Tetras, Rasboras and Danios or in a species tank for breeding purposes. Diet: A good quality flake food and tablet food for adults with sporadic feedings of frozen or live food will keep your Corydoras/Hoplisoma in good health. Etymology: The specific name tukano: Named after the Tukano indians, a tribe that lives in the area of the Rio Tiquié. Remarks: This species is still found on some online sources as Corydoras tukano.

Common Name:

IUCN Red List

Although there is very little information available on this species and it is currently only known from a small range (which is likely due to lack of of sampling), the species occurs in one of the most pristine areas of northern Brazil. Therefore, it is assessed as Least Concern (IUCN 2023).
